Patricia Beggins-Magers

About: Patricia Beggins Magers received an undergraduate degree in art from Olivet College in Michigan, and began a career that included museum exhibits preparation, book and advertising illustration, and commissioned portraiture. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from Georgia State University and lives and works in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Her work represents a range of interests, subject matter and media. She uses whatever methods suit the expressive needs of the work, whether oil, acrylic and other water-based paint, drawing materials, collage, encaustic (mixing heated beeswax with oil paint) or constructing three-dimensional pieces from found objects. She is interested in landscape, (particularly of the Chattahoochee River which flows near her home) and in the abstracted forms in cityscapes. She has drawn and painted the figure extensively and is currently using old family photographs as a catalyst to explore themes of relationship, mystery and connection to the past. —Inspired by extensive time spent in India and my ongoing exploration and experience of Eastern meditation practice, I allow my work to take whatever unpredictable twists and turns it will. On the way from unformed idea through physical reality, I may incorporate torn paper, wax, the written word, fabric, found objects, or recycled parts of old canvases. It often reminds me of child's play, like making mud pies or dollhouses. The fun is in allowing the work to go its own way, and in how often I am surprised and delighted by what shows up.—PB
