I chose glass as my medium
because of its complex nature.
I feel that glass adds an extra
element to my art. Glass has a
mysterious quality, acting
simultaneously as a liquid and
solid. Working with glass
requires an understanding of how
to manipulate the duality of the
medium, utilizing patience mixed
with anxiety, skill combined with
coincidence and confusion with
clarity.
The images and emotions that I try to convey through my art attempts to play on the juxtaposition of polar opposites. The natural and the rigid, the joyous and the sorrowful, the fluid and the frozen are concepts that bear a striking resemblance to the act of working with hot glass. My sculptural work is created using a several of forms. Some of the forms are blown and gradually coaxed into shape using a variety of tools. Other forms are created in the solid and shaped using a similar process. The forms are fused and then by adding or removing hot bits of glass, the shape of the resulting object is refined.
The complexity of glass as a medium affords me the opportunity to see the inner thoughts of my mind come to life in a manner not possible in other media. It is exciting to take the known nature of the material and use my skills to expand and challenge the medium and myself.
