Several times a day I walk from my studio to the barn some 50 yards away to visit my chickens. Sometimes it is gloriously wonderfully spring-like and sometimes it is wet, cold and dreary. Each time I go,
I remind myself to be “in the moment” – inhale, exhale and be grateful.
Today is January 19, 2010. I read in Proverbs 2:1-2 my artist statement. Receiving and treasuring God’s word is foundational
for me. With that, my intention is to be attentive, to incline my heart
to understanding.
Whether I paint a boat or a dress or a chair or whatever, I place myself and all my attention in that moment. It is a position of anticipated blessing. My artist statement should read like a daily devotional. Proverbs 2:9-10: “Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity - every good path. For wisdom will come into your heart and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.”
I am in my painting – not just my eyes but my whole self. I find that it is no longer an accomplishment to finish a painting. It is a surrender to the painting – surrendering to the moment at hand. Being present in my own life. Not looking backward, not looking forward but being totally present from edge to edge of canvas. A peaceful, open stillness all to the glory of God through His grace.
As I practice quieting my life and my art, I allow the canvas and fabric as well as the cows and other images to be descriptive of the good things. My art speaks my words for me.
Once upon a time words became images – descriptive images. Or was it once upon a time images became words? Both are for the moment.
